Legionella pneumophila

Test Code: 201800

Clinical Utility

This assay is only available as part of a panel and cannot be ordered individually.

Legionella pneumophila is a gram negative pleomorphic bacterium and is the causative agent of Legionnaires' disease, causing infection in the lungs and severe pneumonia requiring hospitalization. The bacteria can also cause Pontiac fever, a less serious infection that seems more like a mild case of the flu and generally resolves on its own. Legionella is transmitted via contaminated aerosolized water, and is not transmitted from person-to-person. Those most at risk are patients who have failed outpatient antibiotic therapy for community-acquired pneumonia, patients with severe pneumonia in intensive care, pneumonia patients in the setting of a legionellosis outbreak, patients with travel history and the immunocompromised.
