Neisseria meningitides, often referred to as meningococcus, is a gram negative diplococcus. Neisseria meningitides can cause meningitis and other forms of meningococcal disease such as meningococcemia, a life-threatening sepsis. It is an exclusively human pathogen and the main cause of bacterial meningitis in children and young adults, causing serious impairment and sometimes death. About 1 out of 10 people have the bacteria in the back of their nose and throat with no symptoms of the disease, otherwise known as ‘a carrier.' In addition to infants, children and adolescents, other groups at increased risk for meningococcal disease include household or close contacts of case patients, patients without a functioning spleen or with terminal complement component deficiencies, persons exposed during an outbreak of meningococcal disease, persons traveling to a country where meningococcal disease is epidemic or highly endemic, first-year college students who live in residence halls, and military recruits.
