Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Test Code: 202400

Clinical Utility

This assay is only available as part of a panel and cannot be ordered individually.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a gram negative bacillus bacterium. Serious infections usually occur in persons hospitalized, especially those on breathing machines, using catheters, from surgical wounds and burns, and can be life-threatening; and those with weakened immune systems. Multi-drug resistant Pseudomonas can be deadly for patients in critical care. The bacteria are spread by healthcare workers or from equipment that gets contaminated and not properly cleaned. Healthy persons can also develop mild illnesses, especially after exposure to infected water. Ear infections, especially in children, and more generalized skin rashes may occur.
