Kingella kingae is an anaerobic gram-negative coccus that primarily infects children below the age of five and is a frequent colonizer in this age group. K. kingae is the most common cause of septic arthritis and osteomyelitis, and has historically been an underappreciated cause of infections. This is likely due to the fact that K. kingae is very fastidious and rarely grows in culture.
